Fire department broken into
DUDLEY -- Fire Chief Chester Foss of the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department reported that the fire station was broken into on Thursday night and $2,500 in cash was stolen. A book of 500 checks was also taken after unknown suspects kicked in two doors at the U.S. 117 Alternate station. Damages were estimated at $700, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said.
Copper theft
Angelyn Jackson taylor of North Oleander Avenue reported Thursday that $650 worth of copper tubing had been stolen from an Isler Street residence.
Explosion
There was nothing firefighters could do about a fire that followed an explosion in a farmer's shop near Harold Barwick's house east of Mount Olive early Friday morning.
Mount Olive Fire Chief Steve Martin said the 100-by 50-foot storage and office building off N.C. 55 east was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Several explosions had occurred inside. The building contained flammable items like LP tanks and a chemical called ethyl bromide. Inside, were 105 bales of hay inside and a couple of offices.
The $150,000 building and contents were a total loss.
"We put water on it, but we didn't want to get anybody in danger. It was going when we got there. There was nothing we could do," Martin said. "It was just one of those things that was too far gone."
The cause of the explosions is undetermined, and investigation continues to find out what caused the blaze.
Mutual aid was provided by the Dudley and Indian Springs Volunteer Fire Departments.
Investigations
The Goldsboro Police Department filed these reports:
*Demetries Speight of Beech Street told police a man he does not know brandished a small handgun at him Friday night while he was delivering pizza for Pappa John's at a residence on Edgerton Street. Speight said the man was wearing a dark mask over his face and was accompanied by three other people.
*There was no sign of forced entry to a safe in the Wendy's restaurant at 2200 Wayne Memorial Drive, but the manager said $200 was missing Friday night. The safe was last secured earlier in the day.
