Wayne County Public Library announces Black History Month writing competition

The Wayne County Public Library will host its first Black History Month Creative Writing Contest for fourth- through sixth-graders and for seventh- through tenth-graders.
Participants can express themselves in any creatively written form, whether it be poetry, essay, prose, rap/rhyme or anything on the theme of "Celebrating the Tuskegee Experience." Entries may also be submitted via e-mail to shorlette.stephens@waynegov.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb. 15. Winners will be announced the following week.
The overall winner will receive an IPOD shuffle.
Children's Librarian Shorlette Stephens describes the IPOD shuffle as a popular type of mp3 player.
"It is a smaller version of an IPOD. They both store and play music," she said. "The shuffle is small, and you can clip it onto your clothing. It also comes in a variety of cool colors. I think kids will be excited to win one."
And on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., the winners in both categories will share their work at the library's "Celebrating the Tuskegee Experience" program. The public is invited to attend the program, which will feature a discussion led by members of the Wilson V. Eagleson Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen from Wayne County and surrounding areas.
