Fremont approves subdivision

FREMONT -- Fremont town officials said rumors had been flying about a new mobile home park, but the town board approved a citizens' request to subdivide her grandmother's property that could only allow four homes.

After a little explanation -- and no public comment -- commissioners approved a four-way split of land now owned by Charlotte May and her siblings.

Commissioners also took a small step toward seeking financing for a sewage "spray field," an attempt to bring down bills paid to Goldsboro for handling wastewater.

Before the unanimous vote to approve Mrs. May's request, the new property owner and husband John may explained their intent on land just north of 291 Old Black Creek Road.

Mrs. May said the land is owned by her grandmother Eleanor Davis Scott.

"I know you all heard some sort of rumor that we're going to put mobile homes on it, but that's not the case," Mrs. May said. "We plan to put a house on it, but that's it."

Town Manager Kerrie McDuffie said the current subdivision only would allow one mobile home per 7.5 acres.

Any future requests would have to be brought back before the town's planning board and board of aldermen, McDuffie said.

In other action, officials voted unanimously to ask the Clean Water Management Trust Fund for $500,000 to finance a spray field.

Fremont once employed a spray field to disperse some wastewater over land, but the field was at some point taken out of use, officials have said.
