Eastpointe, the local mental health agency covering Wayne, Duplin, Lenoir and Sampson counties, has received a $388,400 grant that it will be using to help support residents who are homeless, disabled or simply in need of support services.

The grant, which is being given by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will not actually be available to clients until after July 1, but Eastpoint Housing Coordinator Albert Barron said he wants people to be aware that it is coming.

"This is the first time we've had anything like this awarded to us," he said.

The goal, he explained, will be to provide about dozen families with housing and supportive services in order to help them become more self-sufficient.

"Even though there's a lot of bleak stuff going on with the reform of the mental health system, there are some positive things going on," Barron said. "Hope and help is coming through this award."

Specific eligibility criteria and application processes will be determined in February.
