Seniors qualify as semifinalists for Morehead-Cain scholarships

Three Wayne County Public Schools' high school seniors are semifinalists for one of the most prestigious college scholarships in the nation.
Vying for Morehead-Cain Scholarships to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are Emilee Quinn of Charles B. Aycock, Noelle Kelly of Eastern Wayne and Brian Heim of Spring Creek high schools. They are competing against 250 semifinalists in the selection process.
In addition to a four-year scholarship, recipients will participate in summer enrichment programs and will have the opportunity to travel abroad.
The three local semifinalists recently traveled to Greenville to be interviewed by a regional committee. Over the coming weeks, the field will be narrowed down to 60 to 70 finalists who will compete at UNC-Chapel in early March.
Finalists will then have the opportunity to learn more about the university and attend classes.
The selection process began last fall, with approximately 1,500 candidates from across the state competing against students from across the U.S., Great Britain and Canada.
Between 75 and 85 Morehead-Cain scholarships will be awarded.
"Advancing this far in the Morehead selection process is quite and honor and accomplishment," said Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent, congratulating the three area students.
"We with them well in their pursuit of this prestigious scholarship. We are proud to have them representing Wayne County Public Schools' in this distinguished group of academic achievers."
