Lenoir sheriff explains message

Lenoir County Sheriff W.E. "Billy" Smith said a new phone system is responsible for an answering machine message received when calling a non-emergency line at the Sheriff's Office. On Saturday, some N.C. 55 residents near the Wayne County line said they tried to complain about noise at Club 55 El Abuelo and received the message when calling. The residents said the line had previously been answered by a live human being. Smith said the error was due to a new phone system not rolling over, and that the Sheriff's Office was "addressing those issues." Smith said that residents can call Lenoir County Emergency Services at 252-559-6118 with non-emergency needs.

Assault

Scott Baumgartner of East Ash Street reported Monday that he was beaten on Friday in the park on North Herman Street by three black males, police said. Baumgartner's front teeth were broken in the incident, Goldsboro police said.
