Detectives with the Goldsboro Police Department say the motive for the murder of Ernesto Delgado, who was found dead of a gunshot wound in a ditch off Randall Lane on Nov. 21, was robbery.
Police have charged three Goldsboro residents in Delgado's death, police Sgt. Chad Calloway said today.
Facing counts of murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon are Darian Sutton, 17, of Randall Lane; Tyruss J. Lawrence, 21, of Sanborn Place; and Veronica Danielle Steele, 17, of Clifton Ridge Road.
Chief Tim Bell and Calloway said Wednesday morning that they expected the investigation into Delgado's death to come to a close before the day was out.
The arrests were made at 9:30 a.m., Calloway said, after an investigation involving both Goldsboro police officers and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation.
The three charged suspects are being held without privilege of bond in the Wayne County Jail, Calloway said.
Delgado's co-worker and friend at The TreeSource said that the week of Delgado's death, checks were distributed early, on Wednesday, because the banks would be closed over Thanksgiving.
Police found Delgado's green 1999 Plymouth Voyager van in a ditch around 11:30 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving.
Delgado had suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead on the scene, Calloway and reporting officers said.
