Second trolley added to downtown Tuesdays

Horses clunking down Center Street, people caroling and chilly temperatures can mean one thing -- Christmas is coming. And to get in that holiday spirit, free trolley rides will be held downtown every Tuesday before Christmas from 6 to 8 p.m.

Starting Dec. 4, residents won't have to wait so long in line because two trolleys will take part in the action.

It's a good thing, said City Manager Joe Huffman, who worked to authorize the spending of $1,200 for the extra trolley.

"The crowd ran from the flag poles (in front of City Hall Annex) almost to the corner of Mulberry and Center streets, and that was at 5:45 (p.m.) when I saw that. The line was out there earlier than that. I heard people out there at 5:30 (p.m.)."

A few council members had an interest in getting the extra trolley out there because of the overwhelming response to the activity.

"It seemed like a very considerate thing to do for the public," Huffman said. "So we found some money, we had money available, so we used it."

Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.'s Promotions Coordinator Lara Landers is happy.

"We are so thankful that the city did that," she said.

Huffman said it was nothing really.

"I think it's just great to see people downtown," he said. "You see people out and about during the day, but it's nice to see people downtown after hours. It's a great thing."

Huffman said two trolleys will be used for the rest of the rides unless interest wanes.
