Marijuana seized

A Mount Olive man was caught with 27 pounds of marijuana, leading to charges, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office says. Antonio Cruz, 31, Bennett's Bridge Road, was charged with trafficking in marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of a controlled drug, police said. Cruz was jailed in lieu of $400,000 bond, Maj. George Raecher said. Raecher said the arrest came as a result of a joint investigation between the Wilson Police Department, the Wayne-Goldsboro Drug Squad and the Duplin County Sheriff's Office.

School evacuated

Greenwood Middle School students got a half-hour break from classes when a motor in the heating system started smoking in the seventh-grade hallway Monday, Wayne County Schools spokesman Ken Derksen said. "It just basically overheated and that's what caused it to blow the smoke," Derksen said. "In talking with the maintenance supervisor, it's not uncommon for the fans to go out." There was no damage to the building and students returned to class around 2 p.m., the spokesman said.
