Goldsboro police say they found an unidentified man mortally wounded by gunfire in a field near Courtyard Circle about 9:30 p.m. Monday.
Police said they had tentatively identified the man, but had not yet notified the victim's next of kin, investigator Dave Cloutier said.
The man had suffered several handgun-inflicted wounds and was lying in a field near basketball courts about 150 to 200 yards from the road, Cloutier said.
The investigator said the man looked to be in his mid 20s, but "it was kind of hard to say."
Cloutier said he could not release information about the location of the suspect's wounds, and did not know how many times he had been shot.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police got word of the shooting from a phone call, the investigator said.
"Somebody called down there from Courtyard that somebody had been shot," Cloutier said.
The basketball courts at Courtyard Circle are the first thing one sees when pulling into the complex, the investigator said.
At this point, investigators have no ideas on a motive, the investigator said.
"We don't know what it is," Cloutier said. "We don't know if it's drug related or gang related or anything. We're trying to figure that out."
The investigator said they were still looking suspects.
An autopsy was to be performed in Chapel Hill.
