50th law enforcement class at WCC graduates

Wayne Community College graduated its nine cadets of its 50th Basic Law Enforcement Training class recently.
Certificates were conferred on Daniel Broughton, Jackie Davis Jr., Joshua Stine, Anthony Tilghman and Ellis White II, all of Goldsboro; James Bell of Mount Olive; J.R. Bravo of Pikeville; Matthew Lee of Faison; and Peter Smith of Selma.
The top fitness award went to Broughton, while Smith demonstrated the most okverall proficiency in use of firearms and was presented the "Top Gun" award. Cadets completed nearly 50 hours of handgun, shotgun and combat work in both the classroom and on the firing range.
The cadets chose two of their classmates in lieu of a guest speaker. Valedictorian Stine and Bravo talked about coming together as strangers and leaving as brothers.
Since the BLET program was launched in 1987, it has produced 801 graduates, who work in 43 different law enforcement agencies around the state.
The latest class boasts being hired by local agencies, or have offers pending. Broughton, Davis and Stine have been hired by Goldsboro Police Department; Bravo will be working with Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Still being processed are Tilghman with Goldsboro, Bell with Mount Olive, Lee with Newton Grove, and Smith with Zebulon police departments.
The accredited program will start its 51st academy, a day program, on Aug. 20, and an evening session is scheduled to begin in January.
