Grain workshop Tuesday

Three workshops on growing organic grains, sponsored by the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, will be held across eastern North Carolina, beginning July 17.

The first workshop on organic corn and soybeans is Tuesday in Wayne and Duplin counties, from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Participants will see crop rotations and learn how growers at Burch Farms of Faison and Parker Farms of Goldsboro manage their organic corn and soybean crops.

The workshop will also include information on fertility options and weed management strategies for organic grain crops.

An Aug. 2 workshop on organic grain production will be held at Looking Back Farm in in Tyner from 6-8:45 p.m. An Aug. 7`` workshop at Macha-Pungo Farms in Pantego the Vernon James Research and Extension Center in Plymouth from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. will focus on organic grain research and includes a farm tour. The workshop will showcase organic corn and soybean production as well as on-farm organic weed management trials.

The workshops are part of the Seasons of Sustainable Agriculture series of workshops hosted by the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.
