Two injured during shooting at Mount Olive intersection

A driver and his 3-year-old son were injured Thursday in a shooting that happened during an argument at the intersection of South Johnson and East Williamson streets in Mount Olive.
Garcia Kornegay, 28, of Elmore Street, Mount Olive, was in the car with his son, Caleb Kornegay of Hillsboro Street, Mount Olive, when a lone gunman opened fire on his automobile, police said.
There was an argument between the driver and the shooter just moments before, Mount Olive Police Chief Emmett Ballree said. However, what the men were arguing about was not immediately known.
"At about 10 a.m., we got a call of shots fired in the area of South Johnson Street and East Williamson Street," Ballree said. "When we arrived, we had an adult male and a small child. They were transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital by EMS."
Garcia Kornegay was struck in the upper right side of his chest, while the child received a cut on his arm possibly from shattering glass during the assault. Ballree said he doesn't suspect the child was actually shot.
"The window beside the boy was shattered," he said. "He had a cut on his arm, but a bullet did not enter his body."
Several other children were inside the car at the time of the shooting, but, they left the scene before police arrived, Ballree said.
Police canvassed the area collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to find the culprit. It didn't take long for police to zero in on a suspect.
The shooter is described as a black male in his 30s.
"We do have a suspect, but no arrests have been made," Ballree said.
