Bryan not running

Jimmy Bryan might have announced his intention to run for re-election this November -- if his business did not need him more.
His campaign likely would have promoted a clean city, one with a revitalized downtown and a low rate of crime -- if he had not announced Tuesday that his name will not be present on the fall ballot.
For the District 1 councilman, learning the nuances of city government has been "an experience."
But Bryan said he is needed more at Sportsman's World.
"I finally came to the conclusion that I just couldn't run again," he said. "It's simply a business thing. I have got my business here, and it has been a little more challenging than it has been in the past. It's a decision I've got to make."
He admits it will be a little strange -- not walking into council chambers every other Monday, not answering calls from concerned neighbors.
But Bryan said he will keep fond memories of the experience -- the day he helped approve reconstruction of the Paramount Theater, the day Goldsboro's new City Hall opened its doors.
"It's been very rewarding, and I think we've come a long way," he said. "We established a 10-year plan, the city is a lot cleaner and I think we're on the right track with what we're doing downtown."
Bryan is not sure who will run for the soon-to-be-vacant seat. But with several "strong leaders" in the community, he said he feels certain the residents of District 1 will elect the right person for the job.
"There are some good people in this district who could step in and do a good job," he said. "(Being on the council) is about making this city a great place to live. It's about doing the right thing, creating a city we can all be proud of."
Bryan hopes that with the help of other elected officials and city staff, he has played a role in doing just that over the past few years.
"I'm just glad things are happening," he said. "I'm glad to have been a part of them, don't get me wrong, but as long as they happen and good things continue to happen in Goldsboro, that's what I am concerned about."
So when the November elections are said and done, don't expect Jimmy Bryan to feel a sense of loss.
It was never about him anyway, he said.
"This whole thing has been about the people, what I could do to help them," Bryan said. "It's been an honor to serve the city and my district. I feel very fortunate. I just want to tell (the residents) 'Thank you,' for their support. Hopefully I made a difference."
