North Carolina Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry visited Wayne County Tuesday to hand out the 2007 Department of Labor Safety Awards.

"It's critical that all of us embrace safety and health in our workplaces," she said, adding that even with more people working in North Carolina than ever before, the state still had it's lowest accident rate.

And, she continued, "Wayne County is an excellent example" of that dedication to health and safety.

The awards given to the county departments are in recognition of their outstanding safety and health efforts, which resulted in a substantial reduction of injuries and illnesses and the promotion of safer working conditions during the year 2006.

The 23 recognized departments were each given a Certificate of Safety Achievement based on the number of consecutive years they've met the rigorous standards set forth by the state.
