Goldsboro appoints new city clerk

Goldsboro has a new city clerk -- but residents can expect to see a familiar face recording minutes at Goldsboro City Council meetings.
Former deputy clerk Melissa Brewer, a Princeton native, was sworn into the post after Michelle Daw's resignation earlier this summer.
"It just sort of happened," Mrs. Brewer said.
Currently enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Government, the North Johnston High School graduate is expected to graduate from the program in October.
"I can't wait," Mrs. Brewer said.
The city clerk has several responsibilities, including preparing and distributing the City Council agenda for each meeting and keeping minutes during council sessions.
But for Mrs. Brewer, meeting new faces and helping Goldsboro residents are the most rewarding moments.
"I'm enjoying a lot of things really -- the people that I get to interact with and seeing how government works," she said.
And she has come to realize that a learning experience comes with the job.
"I really didn't know just how much went into government," Mrs. Brewer said. "You just never really think of the logistics of it all -- what it takes to pave a road and things like that."
So she will learn the ropes over the next few months, accepting the challenges that come with change and promotion, to help ensure the city's records are complete and secure.
"I'm just very excited," she said.
Mrs. Brewer, who has worked inside City Hall now for more than two years, is married and has two daughters, 11-year-old Courtney and 9-year-old Savannah. She and her husband make their home in Johnston County.
