Wayne County summer paving projects planned

Motorists in and around Goldsboro ran into a few delays this week as the North Carolina Department of Transportation continued its series of summer repaving projects on and around U.S. 70.
Already, Barnhill Contract-ing Co. has completed the repaving of the ramp coming off the U.S. 70 East bypass onto U.S. 70 East. The company was expected to finish the repaving of both the east and westbound lanes of U.S. 70 around the Spence Avenue exit sometime today.
Other projects this summer will include the westbound lane of U.S. 70 from Long Plant Farm Road to Miller's Chapel Road, the eastbound lane of U.S. 70 from N.C. 111 to Uzzell Road, the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 117 from N.C. 581 to the Old Mount Olive Highway and on N.C. 581 from Arrington Bridge Road to the Neuse River bridge.
All total, DOT is expecting to have nearly 7.5 miles of primary roads paved over the course of the next three months.
Barnhill Contractors also will be paving a little more than nine miles of secondary roads this summer, having already begun with the Target service road from Berkeley Boulevard to Royall Avenue.
Others included in that list will be West Hill Road from U.S. 13 to Mark Edwards Road, Old Seven Springs Road from Emmaus Church Road to Arrington Bridge Road, Salem Church Road from Fedelon Trail Road to North George Street, Mark Edwards Road from New Hope Road to Hood Swamp Road, Tommy's Road from U.S. 13 to Central Heights Road and John Street from Elm Street to Ash Street.
"They want to treat the sections in the worst shape," said DOT technician Donald Belcher.
The goal, added resident DOT engineer Mike McKeel in the Smithfield office, is to have the projects done by the end of the summer.
"We should be done no later than the end of August," he said.
