Free fans available for seniors

Wayne County Services on Aging is kicking off its heat relief program.

Every year, said information and assistance coordinator Nancy Gendreau, her agency gives away at least 25 fans to people in need of a cooling breeze.

"We have people in Wayne County who don't have air conditioning and have no other way to stay cool," she said.

Most of the fans are purchased, in part, with money donated by Progress Energy. Some are donated by county residents, as is the occasional window-unit air conditioner.

Both box and upright oscillating fans are available.

To be eligible for a fan donation, people must:

* Be at least 60 years old.

* Be a county resident.

* Have a home situation where a threat to their health and well-being exists.

* Be a Progress Energy customer -- but only for those fans purchased with the company's donations.

The Wayne County Services on Aging office is located at 204 E. Walnut St. Fans can be picked up or delivered.

To get or donate a fan, call Mrs. Gendreau at 731-1608.
