SMITHFIELD -- Johnston County Manager, Rick Hester has issued a mandatory water conservation notice for all customers served by the Johnston County water supply system, including towns and private utilities served by the county, as well as customers of countywater districts.

"The combination of undetermined water loss during the night and high demand due to dry weather conditions make this necessary," Hester said.

The notice applies to irrigation of lawns and gardens and other non-essential uses. Hester said the action is expected to be temporary and will be lifted at the appropriate time.

Counties across the state are dealing with dry conditions.

Five municipal water systems in the Charlotte area already have called for voluntary conservation of water. Gov. Mike Easley has ordered state agencies in 12 counties of western North Carolina to stop nonessential water use.
