James Shepard, a bus driver for Tommy's Road Elementary School, won a recent School Bus "Road-e-o" sponsored by the Wayne County Public Schools. Shepard mastered the obstacle course and will move on to compete at the upcoming district competition in Clinton on April 24.

The annual School Bus "Road-e-o" gives drivers a chance to showcase their driving and safety skills by maneuvering through a challenging course. Twenty drivers from across the county participated in this year's event, which was held in the bus parking lot next to the school system's administrative offices.

Nicole Griffin and Arthur Herring, both drivers in the central attendance area, finished second and third, respectively. They are also eligible to compete with Shepard at the district level event.

Ricky Carter, the school system's assistant director of transportation, said the competition gives drivers a chance to shine.

"The 'Road-e-o' really shows that we have many fine school bus drivers in our county," he said.

Carter said the event is also a fun way for the school system to stress the importance of school bus safety. This year's competition was sponsored by the Board of Education, and judged by representatives of the Department of Motor Vehicles' School Bus and Traffic Safety Section.
