Two injured in accident on N.C. 111

Two men are recovering from injuries they received in a head-on collision that occurred on N.C. 111 South near Rifle Range Road Monday afternoon.
Dennis Hill, 52, of Deep Run, was traveling south on N.C. 111 in a silver Honda Civic when Jose Avila-Torres, 20, of Goldsboro, crossed the center line and struck him head-on at 5:31 p.m., Trooper R.D. Carraway said.
Several cars had stopped in front of Torres on the two-lane highway to allow a vehicle to turn, officials said. However, Torres allegedly failed to reduce the speed of his green Pontiac Firebird and drove across the center line, Carraway added.
"His brakes locked up, and he slid into Mr. Hill," Carraway said.
Torres' vehicle was traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 mph at the time of impact, Carraway added.
Witnesses said the force of the collision caused Hill's car to spin. It traveled about 13 feet before coming to rest. Torres' car left the road and ended up in a ditch.
Both vehicles were totaled. Damage to both cars were estimated at $11,000.
Emergency crews responded to the accident to render aid to Hill and Torres. Both were transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
The men were wearing seat belts and no alcohol or drugs are believed to be involved in the crash. Torres was ruled at-fault and was cited for driving left of center and driving without a license.
