Youth to compete for title

Jasmine McLamb will represent Seymour Johnson Air Force Base this week and will join Saderio Simmons of the Mount Olive Boys & Girls Club in competing for the state title of Youth of the Year.
The competition begins Thursday, co-hosted at the Officer's Club by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County and the Youth Activities on base.
Jasmine and Saderio will be among 36 youths between the ages of 14 and 18 from throughout the state competing for a $1,000 scholarship from Reader's Digest Foundation, which has sponsored the Youth of the Year program since 1947.
"For 60 years, we have had the great honor of saluting amazing teens for their dedication to their families, Club and community, and helping them achieve their academic and career goals" said Susan Fraysse Russ, executive director of the Reader's Digest Foundation.
The title Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's leadership, character and service to his or her family, school, community and their club.
The 2007 North Carolina state Youth of the Year competition's corporate sponsor, SunCom, will award a $10,000 college scholarship.
The state Youth of the Year winner will then will compete for the title of Southeast Regional Youth of the Year and another $10,000 scholarship. The five regional winners will travel to Washington, D.C., in September to compete for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the President in the Oval Office ceremony.
