School bus drivers to compete Friday

On Friday, Wayne County Public Schools bus drivers will be able to put their skills to the test during the annual "School Bus Road-e-o." The event will be held at the bus parking lot beside the school system's administrative offices on Royall Avenue beginning at 9 a.m.
The competitive event gives bus drivers a chance to showcase their driving and safety skills by maneuvering through a challenging obstacle course. About 20 local school bus drivers are planning to participate. The top three drivers are eligible to compete at the district level in Clinton on April 24.
"We are excited about the 'Road-e-o' this year," said Ricky Carter, assistant director of transportation. "We have a new location with a new set up that is very much like the district 'Road-e-o' that the top 3 winners will attend."
The annual competition is a fun way for the school system to stress the importance of school bus safety, Carter said.
Sponsored by the Board of Education, it is judged by representatives of the Department of Motor Vehicles' school bus and traffic safety section. District level winners will be eligible to compete at the state finals in Raleigh on May 9 and 10. The winner in that competition can go on to the national championship later this year.
