Recovered property

The Sheriff's Office recovered a stolen Caterpillar backhoe last week that had been reported as stolen on March 9 from the construction site of the new Wal-Mart at N.C. 581 and U.S. 70 west.

The property was recovered in a wooded area in the 1600 block of Old Smithfield Highway. It was returned to the owner. Investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information that can assist in the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Office or Wayne County Crime Stoppers.

Breaking and entering

Tiffany Love Cumby, 25, of S. Leslie Street, reported a break-in at her home on Friday. A window was found open, and among the items missing were an X-Box game console, several games, a purse and a checkbook. Estimated value of the items taken was $710.

Investigations

Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:

*On Friday at 1:30 p.m., a woman reportedly threatened to harm a man at Genoa Mart in Dudley. Martin Melvin, 43, of West Main Street, Mount Olive, was advised to secure a warrant.

*Tarra Chevill Chesnutt, 34, Brentwood Drive, Dudley, told police a man took her white 2000 Pontiac from her front yard without permission on Thursday night. The car was valued at $2,000.
