Wayne fares well at music festival

Four Wayne County schools recently participated in the North Carolina Middle School Vocal Solo/Small Ensemble Festival in Greenville, earning either excellent or superior ratings.

Students from Eastern Wayne Middle, Norwayne Middle, Rosewood Middle and Rosewood High schools attended the music competition, sponsored by the N.C. Music Educators Association.

In their first time participating in the small ensemble festival, the Eastern Wayne Middle girls ensemble received a superior rating.

Fifteen students from Eastern Wayne also participated in the solo division and earned superior ratings. They were Autumn Blackmon, Teghan Bland, Shannon Clyde, Madeline Edwards, Jacob Forrester, Veronica Hawes, Kaitlyn Henry, Hunter Houtzer, Caleb Jones, Josh Laws, John Lim, Delois Meadows, Curry Morris, Luke Robert, and Rebekah Royall.

Choral instructor for the school is Kenneth "Skip" Morris.

The Norwayne Cobra Choir received a rating of excellent. The group sang "Mi Yitneni Of" and "Send Down the Rain".

Eleven Norwayne students participated in the solo category and received a superior rating. They were Payton Bailey, Haley Daniels, Erica Darner, Shelby Dupree, Kelly Heath, Kayla Houston, Laura Kelly, Brooke Mayo, Ellen Pope, Jessica Robbins, and Brittany Yelverdon.

The Norwayne choral instructor is Michelle Walker.

Eight Rosewood Middle students competed in the solo portion of the festival, receiving a superior rating. The students were Brittany Applewhite, Beth Stovall, and Everette Joyner. Five students received Excellent Ratings. Chelsea Sawkiw, Marieke Parrish, Rachael Kornegay, Danielle Horne, and Anjelica Knight.

Rosewood High students also competed in the solo division. Three students earned superior ratings, Drew Kingsbury, Keiko Gurley and Travontae Lewis. Four students receiving excellent ratings were Samantha Atkinson, Amber Leeming, Roseina Britten and Kevin Lundquist.
