Mayor will take his spot at Starbucks drive-thru

If your coffee maker goes out tonight, have no fear. Goldsboro Mayor Al King might just have a solution for you.
Friday morning, he will be whipping up everything from lattes to espressos at the Berkeley Boulevard Starbucks -- all to help the United Way reach its $1.44 million goal in what volunteers are calling the "Bring It On" campaign.
Now that 70 percent of that goal has been reached, King will honor his commitment and serve hot drinks to the masses from 8 to 9 a.m. -- armed with a tip jar the proceeds of which will benefit the United Way.
Last week, State Rep. Louis Pate did his part, too, packing dills at the Mt. Olive Pickle Co. in celebration of 60 percent.
Once King's service is complete, the drive to $1.44 million continues.
If the organization reaches 80 percent, Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders will sell doughnuts at the Ash Street Krispy Kreme.
And there's a prize for 90 and 100 percent, too.
Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds manager -- and Goldsboro native -- Jerry Narron will read to children at the Wayne County Public Library once 90 percent comes in. And once all the money is raised, local attorney and United Way campaign chairman Geoff Hulse will jump out of plane.
So avoid the long wait at Starbucks' drive-thru Friday and walk on in -- and bring a camera to capture this moment. You might not see the likes of this again.
