It's finally here -- the night of costumes, candy, scares and surprises.

Goldsboro and Mount Olive officials said both are recognizing Halloween and trick-or-treat festivities today.

As is their custom, the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. will host its Boo-It event at the corner of Center and Chestnut streets starting at 4 p.m. Every year, the event brings together local children and downtown merchants for a pre-trick-or-treat candy exchange, officials said.

Games, prizes, a cupcake walk, crafts and entertainment from UBI the Clown also will be featured at the event.

Then, from 6 to 8 p.m., both Goldsboro and Mount Olive will open the streets for trick-or-treaters.

Mount Olive Police Maj. Ralph Schroeder said the town will officially recognize treat-or-treating from 6 to 8 p.m. During that time, drivers are urged to be cautious and watch out for children.

And while there is no enforced age restriction for door-to-door candy collectors, he said "middle school kids are about the limit."

"High school kids don't need to be trick-or-treating," Schroeder said. "They're a bit too old."
