Flu vaccines available for some in area

Flu vaccines for pregnant women and children, age 6 months to 18 years, are now available at the Duplin County Health Department. They are free of charge.
"It's a different dose, but it's all supplied by the state. Because it's a state vaccine, when we run out of it, we'll get some more," said Duplin County Health Director Ila Davis.
They do not, however, have any vaccines available for the rest of Duplin County's adult population.
"We don't have enough to start an adult flu vaccine clinic yet. But we are going to go ahead and vaccinate the nursing homes that have requested it," Davis said.
When they do that, their adult vaccine stock will be exhausted.
She's hoping the rest of it will be in by the second week of November.
"That's plenty of time (to be effective this year)," Davis said.
When it does become available, the department will begin scheduling clinics.
Until then, pregnant women and children ages six months to 18 years can come to the health department, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 340 Seminary St., Kenansville.
People are asked to bring their insurance cards if they have them, but if not, the vaccines are still free.
