MOUNT OLIVE -- Original Free Will Baptist churches in Wayne County generated $83,975 in gifts to Mount Olive College, the denomination's private, Christian liberal arts institution.
During the recently annual college dinner, 220 people attended and churches presented their gifts. Of the donations received, 221 were designated as Bridge Builders for contributing $100 or more.
The Convention of Original Free Will Baptists established Mount Olive College in 1951 as one of its ministries and has given strong support throughout its 55-year history.
Barbara Lancaster, Rev. Frank Harrison of Mount Olive, and Evelyn Lancaster, all of Mount Olive, Agnes Corbitt of Pikeville, Margey Smith of Dudley, and Rev. Jeff Daughtry of LaGrange formed the steering committee for the dinner.
Three churches received special recognition at the dinner. Stoney Creek FWB Church was recognized for giving the largest contribution. May's Chapel FWB Church was recognized for giving the most per capita. Union Grove FWB Church was recognized for having the most high school students at the dinner.
"Free Will Baptists are an extremely important part of Mount Olive College. These donors have the power to build futures for students who attend our institution. We salute each person," said Dr. J. William Byrd, president of the College.
