Wayne County drivers take first and second at State Fair demolition derby

RALEIGH -- Wayne County demolition derby drivers Tim Kimbrough and Chris "Arab" Lane brought home first and second place at the derby competition at the North Carolina State Fair on Sunday.
Kimbrough, 31, driving a 1975 Chevrolet Impala, was the last car running at the end of the event, which was held on the final day of the fair. Lane, 23, finished second, driving a '74 Chevrolet station wagon.
Kimbrough described the field of about 25 drivers as "pretty good," and said the competition was close.
"It was tough," he said. "From start to finish, it was wide open."
Kimbrough qualified for the state event by winning one of two derbies held at the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair earlier this month. This was only the second time he has entered the state competition.
Lane qualified for winning the Cumberland County Fair derby.
Another qualifier from Wayne, Larry Lane, didn't fare as well in Raleigh. His rive shaft went out during the free-for-all.
Drivers from across the state, who had qualified in one or more of the more than 40 county fairs, participated in the State Fair demolition derby, which drew thousands of spectators on a rainy day -- perfect for the event.
