Wayne County residents will once again join together to make a difference in the community.

Make A Difference Day will be observed Saturday, Oct. 28. The event is a national celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.

Anyone who helps out with a project to benefit another group or individual and submits an entry form can become eligible for local and national awards and a cash donation to a charitable cause, said Barbara Stiles, the director of Volunteer Wayne.

The national sponsors for the event are USA Weekend magazine and the Points of Light Foundation.

Individuals and groups are urged to take part in the event, whether a civic club, church group, scout unit, youth club or business.

Last year, more than three million people across the nation participated in projects ranging from roadside cleanup to helping senior citizens.

In Wayne County last year, so many people were performing projects on the designated day that it was changed to Make A Difference Week to accommodate the work. Residents held supply drives, performed landscaping for charities, painted and repaired buildings and stocked food shelves at emergency shelters, among other duties.

The Make A Difference Day Web site has information on guidelines for participating, timetable, idea generator, planning guides and much more.

The Web address is www.makeadifferenceday.com.

One group already planning to make a difference Saturday is the Wayne County 4-H Club and its after-school program. Its members are collecting slightly used and new coats for local children and adults. For more information about the project, call the 4-H office at 731-1527.

Any individual or group performing a special project for Make A Difference Day is asked to register the project with Volunteer Wayne at 735-5151 in order that the amount of volunteering across the county can be monitored.
