MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College has received a $25,000 grant from the Harold H. Bate Foundation. The matching funds grant will be used for the college's development of a campus in New Bern.

The college's rapid growth in Craven County is driving the need for expansion. Mount Olive has had a presence in New Bern since 1993 and currently occupies a 10,000-square-foot rented space.

When it first opened its doors, the campus had three staff members and served 55 students. Now 13 years later, the location has tripled its staff and serves nearly 500 students.

The proposed campus would encompass 10 to 15 acres of land on which a 15,000- to 20,000-square-foot academic/administrative building would be constructed. The additional space would accommodate 300 to 400 more students and provide facilities for community use such as conference and training rooms.

The grant is named after Harold H. Bate, a philanthropist and retired executive who died in August 2000.
