KENANSVILLE -- The Duplin County Library system is holding a campaign to sign up first-time library patrons in observance of September as Library Card Sign-up Month.

During September the American Library Association and libraries across the state will be reminding children, families and state residents to visit their public library to sign up for a library card.

The Duplin libraries in Beulaville, Faison, Kenansville, Magnolia, Rose Hill and Warsaw are participating in the statewide campaign.

The observance was launched in 1987 to meet the challenge of then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett, who said every child should have a library card.

Celebrated throughout the month of September, the Smartest Card Campaign encourages people to check out what's available at their library by signing up for a library card. Libraries today offer more than just books. They also have things like videos, CDs, computers, Internet access, book discussions and exhibits. Libraries also offer a variety of programs to stimulate an interest in reading and learning.
