Construction of new Pikeville sewage plant to begin in 60 days

PIKEVILLE -- Construction on Pikeville's new sewage plant should begin in the next 60 days, says town engineer Tyndall Lewis of McDavid Associates. Lewis recommended the construction of a plant with a 140,000 gallons per day capacity. The current system allows for 99,000 gallons per day.

In recent years, the existing system has been overloaded due to infiltration problems. The entrance of excessive groundwaters and storm drainage waters caused the flows to exceed limits. The state mandated improvements to the system, and offered a $3 million clean water grant. In addition the town has received a $500,000 low-interest loan from the Division of Water Quality, and a $400,000 grant from the state's Rural Economic Center.
