A ban on corrugated cardboard will go into effect Friday at the Wayne County Landfill, Solid Waste officials said.

County officials have been informing businesses, haulers and residents of the ban for several months and many have prepared for the change. Starting Friday, any person, business or hauler that attempts to take corrugated cardboard, which is the kind of multi-layer cardboard that large items are packaged in, will be assessed a fee in addition to the landfill's $23 per ton tipping fee.

Anyone caught trying to get rid of corrugated cardboard in their regular waste will be charged $200 for the first offense, $400 for the second and $600 for any subsequent offense, said Lloyd Cook, the director of the county's Solid Waste Department.

The department is banning corrugated cardboard from the landfill because of the space it takes up.
