Junior volunteers honored at hospital

Thirty-four junior volunteers at Wayne Memorial Hospital were honored recently for their work over the summer.
The teens served 1,480 hours during the seven-week program, said Donna Archer of Volunteer Services.
"Most juniors have two four-hour assignments per week," she said. "One assignment was in a patient care unit where they made beds, replenished ice and water, provided nourishment, answered call bells, etc. (Another) assignment was clerical with data entry, copying, filing, etc."
More than 20 departments at the hospital requested the services of the junior volunteers, Mrs. Archer said.
Participants are between 15 and 18 years old and must have an 85 or higher overall grade-point average.
A selection committee reviews the anonymous questionnaires and scores the applicants according to the written answers given. Only those with the highest scores are chosen to participate in the program.
Two awards presented annually are the Junior Volunteer Service Excellence award and the Junior Volunteer of the Year.
The service excellence award is given to the student who exemplifies service excellence. This year's recipient was Justin Adams, a rising senior at Spring Creek High School. He worked in day surgery and on the second floor of the hospital, accumulating a total of 63 hours of serfice.
Noelle Kelly, a rising junior at Eastern Wayne High School, was named Junior Volunteer of the Year, given to a returning or new volunteer who excels in all categories. She is a returning volunteer who served 77 hours in admitting and the nursery this year. Last year, she contributed more than 65 hours to the program.
