City Council to hold six public hearings Monday night

Goldsboro City Council members will have plenty to talk about Monday, as their agenda includes more than 20 items. Presentations, request and petitions of citizens, items requiring individual action and six public hearings make up the docket for their final meeting of the month.

Mayor Al King is expected to make a resolution of appreciation, commending NFL star David Thornton at the beginning of the meeting. King's presentation will be followed by a presentation from 3-HC president Dean Lee.

Chief Building Inspector Ed Cianfarra is also expected to address council, as three more dilapidated dwellings will be recommended for condemnation by his staff. The properties, located at 405 Mulberry St., 1210 Evans St. and 2108 Church St., have reached the end of the three-phase minimum housing process.

As part of their consent agenda, council members are also expected to allocate more than $20,000 for the demolition of the city's Annex Building. The demolition, known as Phase III of the three-phase City Hall project, will begin earlier than scheduled, officials said, to allow more room for construction crews working on Phase II, restoration of the original City Hall facility.

The agenda also includes a formal bid request for the purchase of a heavy duty wheel loader -- a tool requested by the city's Public Utilities department.

The public hearings scheduled for Monday's meeting will include:

*A non-contiguous annexation request from E.J. Pope for property located on the northeast corner of U.S. 70 West and N.C. 581.

*A non-contiguous annexation request from New Life Properties for land on the east-side of Patetown Road, between New Hope and Tommy's roads.

*A rezoning request from Johnson Construction Co. for property located on the east-side of Country Day Road, between Patetown Road and Wheeler Drive. The owners are requesting that the property be rezoned from R-16 residential to R-9 residential.

*A rezoning request from J. Isaac Gurley Farms for land on the southeast corner of Country Day Road and Isaac Drive. The owner is requesting that the property be rezoned from residential to office and institutional.

*A request from Shelley Crabtree and Joanne Lesak, owners of Plum Tree Gardens. Mrs. Crabtree and Mrs. Lesak will be requesting conditional land use for their bed and breakfast located on the west-side of George Street, between Walnut and Chestnut streets.
