Computer grant approved

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners approved a $750,000 grant Tuesday morning that will help the county's public school system improve computer technology in schools around the county.
The Public Schools Building Capital Fund is intended for instructional purposes for individual schools. Money from the fund can be used to buy and upgrade computers and software programs.
This year, the Wayne County Board of Education intends to use the money for its computer lease program, which is in its third year, according to a letter from Assistant Superintendent of Finance Nan Barwick to County Manager Lee Smith.
The commissioners also approved awarding a bid to RBC Centura Bank so the company can handle the county's installment finance agreement.
In other business Tuesday, the commissioners approved changing the name of Party Road, which is located between Hinnant and Nahunta roads near Pikeville, to Ivey Lane. They also amended the county's Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance to include a landfill ban on all cardboard and appointed Gary Darden to the Waylin Fire District Commission.
