MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive will observe National Night Out on Thursday evening at Nelson Street Park. A party and cook-out is open to all town residents. The event is being sponsored by the Mount Olive Police Department and the Unity Heights Community Association and will be held from 6-8 p.m.

Goldsboro will observe National Night Out tonight at Herman Park from 6-9 p.m.

The annual event is held across the country to generate public support for anti-crime efforts. Residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and join their neighbors and law enforcement officers and other public officials interested in making the streets safer.

The Mount Olive event will feature units from the town's police force and fire department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the county Emergency Management Service.

Food, drinks and ice cream will be available and a flashlight parade will be held at 8 p.m.

More than 10,000 communities across the country are planning to hold Night Out activities, with more than 30 million people expected to take part.

The event, which has been in existence for 23 years, is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch.
