Suspect arrested
A man who was arrested Wednesday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad also was wanted by Craven and Durham County authorities and the state Corrections Department.
The man had identified himself as Messiah K. Jackson, 28, of Elizabeth City. But after a further investigation, he was positively identified as Ernest Ethro Carter.
"Based on the information given, we thought he wasn't telling us the truth. Following further investigation, we discovered who he was," Sheriff's Lt. Tom Effler said.
Carter was wanted on eight outstanding warrants for drug violations in Craven County, where was listed on the county's 10 most-wanted list for three years. He was wanted in Durham County on two outstanding warrants for drug violations and by the Corrections Department for a probation violation after convictions for second-degree kidnapping and burglary.
As a result of the Drug Squad's discovery of the man's real identity, Carter also was charged with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and misdemeanor obstruction of officers, in addition to felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He remained confined in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of secured bonds totaling $135,000, officers said.
Carter, whose Elizabeth City address could not be confirmed, was arrested Wednesday after a search of a home in the 200 block of North Carolina Street. $800 worth of marijuana, $1,241 and two firearms were seized.
Carter will appear in Wayne County District Court but will be shuttled among the two other counties to face charges there.
Truck theft, chase
A 48-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police after a high-speed chase on the new U.S. 117 and charged with vehicle larceny.
Haywood Thomas, who did not give a home address, also was charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, reckless driving and failure to heed blue lights or a siren. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Thomas was accused of stealing a 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck owned by Ricky Clark Barwick of Pikeville from Leonard Building and Truck Accessories at 4273 U.S. 70 East.
Jewelry stolen
Almost $15,000 worth of property was stolen Thursday afternoon from a home in the 3800 block of N.C. 55 East near Seven Springs, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
Richard Alan Hunt reported the theft of $14,040 worth of jewelry and a combination television and DVD player with an $800 value. The jewelry included diamond hoop earrings, gold and silver earrings and numerous rings, bracelets and necklaces.
The thief had damaged a glass door to get inside, the report said.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these reports:
*A range, a microwave oven and a dishwasher were stolen between Sunday and Thursday from a home under construction in the 300 block of Maddux Drive. The thief also damaged a hardwood floor and a countertop, the report said. The stolen property, owned by Johnson Construction Co. of Durham, was valued at $1,500. Damage was set at $400.
*A double-axle, 16-foot trailer was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from the Smith Chapel Supply store at 2216 N.C. 55 West. It was valued at $2,700.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A DVD player, a video cassette recorder and a jewelry box were stolen Thursday after a window was smashed at a home in the 800 block of West Oak Street, police said. The stolen property was valued at more than $110. Damage was set at $100 at Olivia McClarin's home.
*About $1,500 worth of copper wire was stolen between June 16 and Thursday from under a vacant rental home in the 700 block of North Alabama Avenue, police said. The wire was owned by Families Two Enterprises of Surf City.
*A blue, four-door 1998 Ford Taurus was stolen Thursday from the 700 block of East Pine Street, police said. The car was owned by the resident, Hubert A. Plummer.
Driver injured
A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $12,500 in a two-vehicle collision Tuesday at N.C. 55 and Camp Jubilee Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ruben Morales Zunun, 24, of Sandspur Drive, Mount Olive, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Zunun was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign and a flashing light.
