Alert citizen helps
deputies arrest
2 after break-in
An alert citizen followed a suspect car Monday after a residential break-in on Pikeville-Princeton Road and called in the information, helping lead authorities to arrest a man and a woman suspected in the break-in and recover the stolen property.
The witness told investigators he saw the couple take the property from the home and load it into a pickup truck. He followed the pickup to Nahunta Road and then to Salem Church Road, where a detective spotted it.
Sgt. Mike Dale and other deputies converged on the pickup.
Mark Anthony Walker, 34, of Duffy Drive and Amy Yvonne Ham, 24, of Smithfield were charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. Walker was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a$75,000 secured bond. Ms. Ham was jailed in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
The property, valued at $1,153, was returned to the resident.
Detective Sgts. Carl Lancaster and Mike Kabler, the lead investigators, are coordinating a further inquiry with Goldsboro police about other similar crimes.
Accidents
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 10 a.m. Monday at New Hope Road and North Berkeley Boulevard, Goldsboro police said. Goldie S. Radford, 54, of Peartree Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Radford was charged with a stoplight violation. Damages were set at $2,000.
*Damage was estimated at $20,000 in the wreck of a tractor-trailer truck at 11:30 a.m. Monday at N.C. 111 and N.C. 581, or Bill Lane Boulevard, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Anthony Tyrone Handy, 49, of Sandhill Drive, was making a left turn from N.C. 581 and his load of wood shavings shifted, causing the big rig to turn over on its side. No charges were filed.
*A sport utility vehicle driven by a 15-year-old was destroyed in a wreck at 2:06 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Church and Charlie Braswell roads, the Highway Patrol said. The SUV had run a stop sign, tried to turn right and landed in the ditch. The SUV was valued at $6,000. No charges were listed.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Four drills, three saws, a sander and a joiner were stolen between Friday and Monday from a storage barn in the 2300 block of N.C. 111 South, deputies said. The property, valued at $1,540, was owned by Best Sand and Gravel Co. of Goldsboro.
*About $272 worth of property was stolen between March 20 and Monday from a rental home in the 3300 block of U.S. 13 North, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The owner, Ruth J. Pelt of Goldsboro, said six pairs of curtains, a fire extinguisher, hand tools, a stool, two chairs, two wind chimes, a shower curtain and two table cloths were stolen. Damage was set at $200.
*A gold necklace was stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 4100 block of N.C. 111 North, deputies said. The resident, Andre L. Williams, put a $400 value on the necklace and set damage at $250.
*Stereo equipment, valued at $1,300, and three DVD movies were stolen between Sunday and Monday from an unlocked sport utility vehicle in the 200 block of Bath Road, deputies said. The resident, Clinton Williford, put a $45 value on the movies. Another Bath Road resident, Donald R. Parrish, said a handgun, valued at $380, was stolen from his unlocked pickup truck.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $1,400, 13 money bags and a money bag with a lock were stolen Monday from a Pepsi truck at 2607 Medical Office Place, police said. The driver, Michael Wilson of Warsaw, said he saw the thief take the property and ride away on a bicycle. Wilson ran after the suspect, grabbed him by his backpack and recovered the property. The suspect then fled. He was described as a black man in his 20s, about 6-feet and 185 pounds with a muscular build and short black hair.
*A laptop computer, a global positioning system and computer equipment were stolen Monday from an unlocked company van in the 100 block of South Berkeley Boulevard, police said. The driver, Matthew Reams of Rocky Mount, said the computer, owned by his employer, G-Tech of Raleigh, was valued at $1,000. Reams' other property was valued at $120.
Drug charge
A fugitive from Virginia was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug and weapons violations. James Lee Croom, 24, of Bizzell Court was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon and no operator's license. He was wanted in Virginia for kidnapping a child. Croom was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 15-year-old girl was reported missing Monday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Rebecca Jewel Britt of 3509 Stevens Mill Road was described as white, 5-feet-2 and 115 pounds with red hair and green eyes. She was seen last at 9 p.m. Sunday. No clothing description was available. She may be accompanied by Ricky Baker, 17, of Mill Creek Road, Princeton. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
