No new taxes planned for Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE -- No tax increase is in store for residents of the town of Mount Olive, but town employees will still get a raise in the coming year.
The Mount Olive Board of Commissioners adopted a 2006-2007 budget Monday night with little discussion. The $2.6 million budget was approved unanimously. It maintains a 59-cent property tax rate.
Town Manager Charles Brown said employees will see a 2.5 percent increase in pay and that there will be no reductions in any of the town's services.
Water and sewer rates have already been increased this year to help cover a bond payment on the town's new wastewater treatment plant.
Town officials are waiting on an audit of the money for the sewer project. The construction contract is already approved. And if the audit is finished today, Brown said, he can send it to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for approval and get work started within 60 days.
The only increase in fees contained in the new budget will be a small service fee passed on by the town from Waste Industries' additional 4 percent fuel charge. Brown said that would amount to about 43 cents on most customers' monthly bills.
