House fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Monday for a predawn fire that caused about $5,500 in damages to a rental home at 720 E. Pine St., a Goldsboro fire official said.
Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said the residents thought they had turned the power off and then left. Langston said an alert neighbor saw the fire, telephoned for help and probably saved the house.
No injuries were reported at the home that was occupied by O'Brien Kornegay, managed by Barnes Property Management of Goldsboro and owned by Chuck Waller of Goldsboro.
Thirteen firefighters responded to the 5:54 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. The first unit arrived at 5:59 a.m. They remained for 66 minutes to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Langston said multiple items were ignited and the fire spread quickly. The fire was confined to the 900-square-foot home.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the home that was valued at $29,000. The contents, valued at $500, were destroyed.
Rape charge
A 34-year-old man was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony second-degree rape.
Howard Sandres of Phillip Court was accused of the crime June 11 in his home, Detective Robert Golimowski said. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond.
Nine hurt in wrecks
Nine people were injured in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $5,800 in a three-vehicle, rear-end collision at 10:21 a.m. Monday on South George Street near West Spruce Street, Goldsboro police said. Robert R. Mendoza, 57, of Comet Drive and Teresa A. Butler, 43, of Nelson Drive were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Mendoza was charged with failure to reduce speed. The third driver was Edna D. Hargrove, 49, of Outlaw Road, Dudley.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 8:20 a.m. Monday at Salem Church and Hinnant roads, the Highway Patrol said. A driver making a left turn from Hinnant Road, Henry Dwight Butts, 62, of Salem Church Road, was charged with a yield violation. The other driver, Karen Elizabeth Vause, 27, of West Hooks River Road, was going north.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 5:32 p.m. Sunday on Emmaus Church Road near Mitchell Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Roger Craig Daniels, 18, of Outlaw Road, was charged with driving left of center after the car, valued at $3,500, had run off the left side, struck a bank and overturned.
*A driver was injured and his car was destroyed in a wreck at 3:10 p.m. Saturday at Nahunta and Fields roads, the Highway Patrol said. Anthony James Peterkin, 43, of Selma, left Wayne Memorial Hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired, reckless driving and driving while his license was revoked after the car, valued at $3,500, had run off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned.
*A car was demolished in a crash at 12:23 a.m. Saturday on Old Mill Road near Big Daddy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Travario Monte Uzzell, 17, of Decoy Drive, Pikeville, was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the car had run off the left side, then crossed off the right side out of control and overturned. The car was valued at $9,000.
*Six people were injured in a three-vehicle, rear-end collision at 5:34 p.m. Friday at Sleepy Creek and Old Mount Olive roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Curtis Samuel Jones, 17, of Beaver Drive, Dudley; a second driver, Teresa Wanda Smith, 32, and her passengers, Jessica Smith, 2, and Janessa Smith, 2, all of Summerlin's Crossroads Road, Mount Olive, and the third driver, Coquena Latawn Cooper, 20, and her passenger, Rosa Cooper, 44, both of Indian Springs Road, Seven Springs, were released after emergency-room treatment. Jones was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were put at $4,700.
*A car sustained about $7,000 in damages in a hit-and-run collision at 12:35 p.m. Friday at Emmaus Church and Pineview Cemetery roads, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver did not stop at a stop sign and struck a westbound car driven by Jose Rodolfo Avila, 36, of Pineview Cemetery Road, Seven Springs.
*Damages were estimated at $7,300 in a two-car crash at 7:49 p.m. Friday on Stevens Mill Road near Rosewood Drive, the Highway Patrol said. A motorist leaving a driveway, Stacy Marie Grady, 20, of Ellis Drive, was charged with a yield violation. The other driver, Daniel Lee Carter, 20, of Sasser Drive, was going south.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A rifle and a handgun were stolen between Friday and Monday after a door was damaged at the Pleasant Pines Mobile Home Park office at 100 N. Running Deer Circle, deputies said. The firearms were valued at $775. Damage was set at $300.
*A man's gold ring with three diamonds was stolen between June 9 and Saturday from a home in the 700 block of N.C. 222 East, deputies said. The resident, Oscar Verlon Taylor, put a $3,000 value on the ring.
*A silver, two-door 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier was stolen between Sunday and Monday from Forest Knolls Road, deputies said. The owner, R.F. Cox of Pikeville, said the car, valued at $10,600, had been borrowed.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Three fishing rods and reels were stolen between Saturday and Monday after a window was damaged on a utility building in the 400 block of Green Drive, police said. The resident, Benjamin Robert Boyette, put a $450 value on his property. No damage estimate was listed.
*About $135 worth of food was stolen Monday after a window was damaged at a home in the 100 block of North Pineview Avenue, police said. The resident, G.D. Bennett, estimated damage at $30.
