Seven Springs' 6th Annual Old Timey Days celebration will be held Saturday. The event will feature two re-enactments of the Battle of Whitehall Bridge.

In December 1862, Union troops headed to Goldsboro on the south side of the Neuse River battled Confederates who were dug in on the north bank.

Last year, more than 60 re-enactors took part in the re-enactment.

This year, a night battle is scheduled. The actual battle also took place at night. Observers at the time said fire from burning buildings and barrels of pine tar could be seen for miles.

For the celebration, Main Street will be blocked off from Rockford Road to U.S. Highway 55, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at the River House on Main Street, adjacent to Whitehall Bridge. Beginning at 10:30, barbecue plates will be available for sale. At 1 p.m. is a period fashion show. The first re-enactment begins at 2 p.m., with a night battle to follow at 8:30.

All day on Main Street will be period demonstrations, artillery and infantry drills, and a field hospital. Twenty-five vendors had registered booths as of this week. Also scheduled to be present are the Wayne County Sheriff's SWAT and dive teams.
