Student 'commissioners' ante up for animal shelter

Students fromWayne County's six public high schools took part Tuesday in the annual mock commissioners meeting designed to give students a chance to see how local government operates.
Participing students spent weeks preparing and researching topics for debate in their meeting, which included such items as pedestrian safety at school crossings, rebuilding the Paramount Theatre, working to reduce teen pregnancy, and adressing the school system's building needs.
The morning was spent observing the real commissioners' meeting. The students then had a chance to discuss issues with commissioners before the mock meeting.
During the students' meeting, they voted to approve spending $900,0000 toward building a new $1.3 million animal shelter, with the stipulation that $400,000 first be raised by private donors.
These students participated in this year's event: Brittany Batts, James Malloy and Matt Thomas from Charles B. Aycock High School; Shannon Devaughn, Sarah Childers and Cameron Simmons from Eastern Wayne; Carnell Mickens, Otivea Banks and Courtney Simpson from Goldsboro High; Alex Dunham, Carissa Morrison and Daniel Ellis from Rosewood High; Andrea Wooten, Jeffrey Turner and Michael Ward from Southern Wayne; and Anna Kearney, Jason Sutton and Brittani Billups from Spring Creek High.
