MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive Police Chief Emmett Ballree called two "Click It or Ticket," checkpoints held by his department this week a success.

Checkpoints were set up on N.C. 55 East near near Country Club Road and on N.C. 55 East near the end of Church Street.

Fifteen drivers were charged with traffic offenses. About 50 officers from four agencies, including the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Goldsboro Police Department and state Highway Patrol, participated.

Nine people were charged with seat-belt violations, three with driving while their license was revoked, two with not having a license and one with an inspection violation.

Ballree said two people in one were taken into custody. The driver was charged with not having a valid license and a passenger was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Two other people also were charged with drug violations.

G. Frank Hackney, overseeing the operation for the Governor's Highway Safety Program, said the checkpoints "get the message out" about highway safety and the use of seat belts and child-safety seats.
