Sheriff's helicopter
helps deputies
find marijuana
The Raven, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office helicopter, is on the prowl again, looking for illegal drug operations.
Officers on board the Raven, the sheriff's Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team and patrol deputies on Tuesday located and destroyed 73 marijuana plants in four areas. The plants were spotted near New Hope Road, Firetower Road near Fremont, U.S. 70 East and Lake Wackena Road. The plants ranged from one to four feet tall. If the plants had been allowed to reach maturity, officers said, they would have been worth $175,200.
Sheriff Carey Winders said the marijuana-growing season is under way and his officers will investigate any reports of marijuana operations. Anyone with information on illegal drug operations is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
Resident catches
man inside home
A resident came home Tuesday, caught a man inside and held him at gunpoint until Wayne County sheriff's deputies could arrive.
The intruder had called the resident, Freddie Thomas Russell, and asked to borrow money, and Russell said he would not be home until later and would contact the man, the report said. Russell told deputies that he had returned home earlier than usual, saw a suspicious car in his yard in the 900 block of Norwayne School Road, then noticed a damaged door and found the intruder going through drawers in his bedroom.
William Benjamin Davis, 30, of Hinnant Road, Pikeville, was charged with breaking and entering. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Cyberstalking
Two Rosewood High School students were arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and accused of posting derogatory comments about a teacher on a web site. The students were charged in juvenile petitions with cyberstalking. They were not identified because of their ages.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $65,150 in nine recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-car collision at 12:27 p.m. Tuesday at East Ash and North Slocumb streets, Goldsboro police said. Travis Lee Turner, 17, of Ryan Boulevard, was charged with a stoplight violation.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,500 in a three-vehicle, rear-end collision at 6:30 p.m. Monday at West Grantham Street and a traffic light at a service road, police said. Shelva D. Brown, 66, of Rosewood Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital . Another driver, Carla P. Vick, 57, of Hardy Talton Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $7,150 in a two-vehicle, rear-end crash at 3:12 p.m. Monday on the U.S. 70 bypass, near North Berkeley Boulevard, police said. Jenny B. Kilpatrick, 53, of Zion Church Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver of a tractor-trailer truck, Curtis Lamont Bryant, 50, of Haywood Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 1:35 p.m. Sunday on Old Grantham Road near Blackjack Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Thomas Andrews Bradshaw II, 17, of Bradford Place, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The car was valued at $6,500.
*A sport utility vehicle was destroyed in a crash at 4:15 a.m. Saturday on Genoa Road near Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. Carlos Antonio Carrasco, 22, of Sundance Trail, Dudley, was charged with a lane-control violation. The SUV was valued at $7,000.
*A Wayne County school bus driver was charged with a safe-movement violation after a collision with a car at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at Rosewood Road and an entrance to the Rosewood High School parking lot, the Highway Patrol said. The report said the driver, Patricia Thomasa Toran, 41, of Forest Knolls Road, was leaving the parking lot and the bus collided with a westbound car that was driven by Anetta Reid, 49, of Prince Avenue. Damage was set at $2,000 to the bus, which had no passengers, and $3,000 to the car.
*A driver was injured and her car was destroyed in a wreck at 8:12 a.m. May 17 on Saulston Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Christina Marie Fry, 28, of Patsy Lane was listed Tuesday in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital. No charges were filed. The car was valued at $2,000.
*Damage was estimated at $7,100 in a one-truck wreck at 2 a.m. May 17 on Capps Bridge Road near Gurley Dairy Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ricky Luke Richardson, 41, of Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*Damages were estimated at $14,900 in a two-car, rear-end crash at 1:22 p.m. May 16 on U.S. 117 near Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Christy Latonya Reid, 26, of Britlan Drive, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Drug charges
A 27-year-old Goldsboro woman was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with two drug offenses. Ersla Denise Sanders of East Holly Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond. Officers seized 247 grams of marijuana . Housing Authority officers assisted in the case.
Two charges
Jeremy Ray Crawford, 26, of West Grantham Street was charged by Wayne County Sheriff's officers with larceny and possession of stolen property. He was accused of stealing tools May 5 from a construction site in the Goose Creek subdivision, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Some property was recovered and returned to the owner. Crawford's bond was set at $9,500.
Juveniles charged
Two juveniles were arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with breaking into the Grounds for Expression restaurant at 209 S. Berkeley Blvd. and stealing a drum set.
The suspects who were not identified because of their ages were charged in juvenile petitions with breaking and entering and larceny. Investigator Dwayne Bevell said the drum set, valued at $1,000, was returned to the owner, Star Whitmore.
Break-in
Video-game equipment and a video cassette recorder were stolen Tuesday from a home in the 100 block of Buttercup Lane, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said. Wesley Blaine Broggi put a $460 value on the stolen property.
