Inmate hospitalized
after trying
to hang himself
A Wayne County Jail inmate was hospitalized today after being found Saturday dangling from a towel in a single cell, Sheriff Carey Winders said.
Durwood Nash Webb, 45, of Saxton Street was found at about 5:55 a.m. by a jail officer. Officers then performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Webb and revived him. He was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Webb was treated and then admitted to the intensive care unit, where he was listed today in stable condition, a spokeswoman said.
Webb had been arrested Friday by hospital police and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. A magistrate placed him under a $1,000 secured bond.
As Webb was being processed and released from custody, Winders said Webb became disorderly again. The magistrate charged Webb with contempt of court and sentenced him to 15 days in jail.
Two shot in car
Two people were grazed by gunshots Saturday night in a parked car in the 1100 block of North John Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The driver, Juante Deshawn Johnson, 18 of Greenville, and a passenger, Jaron Earl Vines, 18, of Greenville, declined treatment from emergency medical personnel. Three other passengers in the car were not struck.
The victims reported that five black men approached their car and one man opened fire.
Gunshots also damaged a window, a hatch, a seat and a door of Johnson's car. Damage was estimated at $800.
Fraud
A Goldsboro woman said she had received a notice from a bank in England that she had won $4 million, a Goldsboro police report said. To get the money, she was told to deposit the check and to send a money order for the same amount to an address in Canada.
During 2004 and 2005, the woman received more checks from the same bank and was told to deposit the checks and send money orders in the same amount to Canada, the report said.
The woman, Gloria Mitnaul, told officers that her winnings never came.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $18,500 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle, rear-end collision at 2:05 p.m. Sunday on West Ash Street at the railroad crossing near Georgia Avenue, Goldsboro police said. One eastbound driver, Paul W. Cunningham, 40, of Yearling Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other driver was Maryland Ramson, 65, of Whitfield Drive.
*Two people were injured in a two-car, rear-end crash at 10:15 p.m. Saturday at West Ash Street and the new U.S. 117, police said. One driver, Ethel F. Britt, 59, of Edwards Store Road, Mount Olive, and a passenger, Brianna Pfennig, 3 weeks, of Raynor Mill Road, Mount Olive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist, Julia Michelle Radford, 19, of Stevens Mill Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were put at $4,000.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-car crash at 3:25 p.m. Friday at U.S. 117 and U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. Nakeva H. Pulley, 27, of Chanute Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms Pulley, who was going south, was charged with a yield violation. The other driver, Samuel Wesley Dewitt, 18, of Bell Court, was going west from Genoa Road. Damages were set at $2,000.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 8:47 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near Piney Grove Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, April Dawn Twiddy, 26, of Kinston, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The car was valued at $7,500. She said she had swerved to avoid a turning car. The her car ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A white 1994 Ford Ranger was stolen between Thursday and Sunday from the 300 block of Blackjack Church Road, deputies said. An air compressor, a torch set, a tool box, a wrench and socket, a computer and hand tools also were taken. The owner and resident, William Preston Spivey, put a $2,000 value on the pickup truck and a $2,350 value on the other property.
*A blue 2004 Tomas moped was stolen between Friday and Saturday from Spring Bank Road, deputies said. The owner, John Wellington of Goldsboro, said the moped was worth $1,500.
*A thief smashed a door glass to enter Brogden Middle School at 3761 U.S. 117 Alternate, Dudley, and then damaged a drink machine, deputies said. Nothing was reported stolen. Damage was put at $800.
Break-ins
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Seven vinyl windows, 15 interior doors, kitchen cabinets with a sink, a glass door and a toilet were stolen between May 1 and Saturday from a vacant home in the 200 block of North Carolina Street, police said. The owner, Jimmy Leon Tart of Princeton, said the property was worth $3,230.
*Two amplifiers, a compact disc player, two speakers and wiring were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a vehicle window was smashed in the 200 block of East New Hope Road, police said. The owner and resident, Anthony L. Phillips, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,725 and damage at $200.
