Art classes planned for children

The Arts Council of Wayne County will be offering a number of art classes for children during the summer. People who are interested in signing their children up should call 736-3300 or go by the Arts Council, 2406 E. Ash St., to get a brochure that has a registration form. Payment is due upon registration.

There will be two teachers for the weeks of June 26, July 17, July 24 and Aug. 7. Students will be divided into two groups that work with each teacher for 90 minutes. Some of the details were still being worked out at press time.

Here is what was scheduled at that point:

June 12-15: Monet Madness in the Morning. Young artists will discover the beauty of Claude Monet's landscapes and color palette. Each student will produce four paintings, mixing colors to achieve a likeness to the Monet style. Age 3 meets from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.; age 4 meets from 11 a.m. until noon. Cost is $50. Instructor: Penny Craven.

June 26-30: Hot Air Balloons. Students will design and create their own hot air balloon. Techniques will include papier mâché sculpture and basket weaving. Ages 5-12 (5-year-olds must have completed kindergarten), 9 a.m. until noon. $75. Instructors: Mary Ann Barwick and Uli Shepard.

July 17-21: Theme TBA. Ages 5-12 (5-year-olds must have completed kindergarten), 9 a.m. until noon. $75. Instructor: Karen Helms.

July 24-28: Theme TBA and The Wonders of Watercolor. Students will use different watercolor techniques to create paintings that can be enjoyed all year long. Ages 5-12 (5-year-olds must have completed kindergarten), 9 a.m. until noon. $75. Instructors: Karen Helms and Emily Holt.

Aug. 7-11: All About Bugs. Ages 5-12 (5-year-olds must have completed kindergarten), 9 a.m. until noon. Students will learn how to create/draw a variety of insects and make them part of their artwork. Projects include basket weaving, scratchart and a three-dimensional project. Also, Summer Butterflies. Butterflies will be created using sculpture, collage and painting. $75. Instructors: Uli Shepard and Catherine Eagles.

Aug. 14-18: Drawing Our Favorite Things. Student will draw and learn to use values in graphite, colored pencil and pastels. Ages 5-8, 9 until 10:30 a.m. Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. until noon. $50. Instructor: Lou Ann Smith.

The Arts Council will also sponsor Kindermusik Camp. Instructor is Penny Jordan and fee is $90. The cost includes an at-home kit.

Planned sessions are:

June 12-16: Creatures at the Ocean, 1 until 2 p.m.; On the Road, 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.; Tell Me A Tale, 4 until 5 p.m.; Creatures In My Backyard, 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. Registration deadline: May 31.

July 10-14: Creatures In My Backyard, 1 until 2 p.m.; Confetti Days, 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.; Tell Me A Tale , 4 until 5 p.m.; and Creatures At the Ocean, 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. Registration deadline: June 28.
