Chase, charges
A car fleeing from Goldsboro police before dawn today crashed into a fence after the driver allegedly had sped away from a gas station without paying, reports said. The driver and passenger jumped from the car but were quickly arrested.
Corey Marvin Barnett, 34, of Calvin Street, was charged with misdemeanor larceny, felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving while his license was revoked, reckless driving, communicating threats, injury to real property, failure to burn headlamps and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $9,000 secured bond.
The incident started at about 12:03 a.m. when a driver fled from the Breakers gas station at 227 N. Berkeley Blvd. without paying for $36.03 worth of gas, police said. Police officers spotted the car and pursued it. The driver tried to make a left turn from East Ash Street to North Spence Avenue on a red light, but was going too fast, the report said. He left 114 feet of skid marks, struck the curb at White's Tire Service, went another 100 feet and struck a fence .
David Dekarlo Sampson, 26, of North Slocumb Street, was charged with misdemeanor larceny. He was jailed in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Damage was estimated at $1,000 to the vinyl fence. The 1998 Ford auto, registered to Rosa V. Whitley of Clayton, sustained about $2,500 in damages.
Accidents
Thirteen people were injured in 11 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Three people were injured in a two-car collision at 8 p.m. Monday at U.S. 70 East and N.C. 111 South. Esther Johnson, 55, and her passenger, Jarvon Williams, 14, both of Pinemont Circle, and the other driver, Lee Alan Smith, 33, of New Bern, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Smith was charged with a stoplight violation. Damages were set at $3,000.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 7:28 p.m. Monday at Patetown Road and Industry Court. Nell M. Kennedy, 72, of Pink Hill, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A passenger was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 5:54 p.m. Sunday on Zion Church Road. Gerardo Alfredo Amador-Melendez, 19 months, of Kenansville was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver, Melissa Melendez Nuncio, 20, of Benson Hog Farm Lane, Kenansville, was not charged. Damage was set at $2,500.
*A passenger was injured in a one-car crash Thursday on U.S. 117 near Arrington Bridge Road. Trevaugh Smith, 10, of Haywood Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. Corina Angela Mumford, 28, of Haywood Drive was not charged. Damage was put at $3,000.
*A driver was ejected and his car was destroyed in a wreck at 8:20 a.m. Saturday on Falling Creek Church Road near Sambo Lambert Road. Walter Johnson Jr., 72, of North Georgia Avenue, was listed Monday in critical condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital. No charges have been filed.
*A driver was injured in a two-car accident at 8:02 a.m. Friday at Friendly Drive and Rosewood roads. Tammy Michelle Hill, 33, of Jackson's Hollow Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Kimberly Lynne Pickett, 17, of N.C. 581, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were put at $3,000.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 4:44 p.m. Friday on U.S. 70 near Beston Road. The driver fled. The car, valued at $6,000, was registered to Javier Antonio Galvez of Smithfield.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle, rear-end crash Thursday on U.S. 70 near Powell Road. Nancy P. Baucom, 81, of Fallin Boulevard was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Carla N. Dawson, 38, of Mays Store Road, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 5:27 p.m. Wednesday at Genoa and Potts roads. Martina Smith, 18, of Lockmere Circle, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Teagon Marie Ross, 16, of Outlaw Road, Dudley, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 11:37 a.m. Wednesday on Old Smithfield Road. Ervinda Marion Brunson, 44, of Old Smithfield Road was released after emergency-room treatment and charged with a lane-control violation.
*Three people were injured in a two-vehicle, rear-end collision at 2:50 p.m. May 9 on O'Berry Center Road near N.C. 581. Christopher Devon Kornegay, 40, and his passengers, Catherine C. Kornegay, 41, and Christie Laketta Kornegay, 20, all of LaGrange Road, LaGrange, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ashley Brett Hester, 18, of Haven Lane, Princeton, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were put at $3,000.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, jewelry, clothing, a cell phone and about $300 were stolen Saturday from a home in the 100 block of Mill Creek Court . D.E. Overton set the value of the property at $2,878.
*Two shotguns, a video game system and 43 DVDs were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Sunrise Drive,. Curtis Jerome Teachey estimated the stolen property's value at $1,724 and damage at $100.
*A television was stolen from a home in the 900 block of Durham Lake Road. Christine Holmes put a $225 value on the TV.
*A blue 1984 Ford F-150 pickup truck valued at $1,000 was stolen from Dan Wise Chevrolet near LaGrange.
*A blue and white four-wheeler was stolen from a yard in the 900 block of Vail Road. Eric Todd Jernigan put a $2,500 value on it.
*A blue moped valued at $1,000 was stolen from behind a store on Stoney Creek Church Road.
*An air conditioner was stolen between from a mobile home in the 1800 block of Hinnant Road. C.M. Martin said it was worth $3,500.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A laptop computer, its case and a mouse, earrings and $20 were stolen from a home in the 1400 block of Catalpa Street. Linda Jordan put a $1,937 value on the property.
*A radio and compact disc player and a CD were stolen from a vehicle in a motel parking lot at 909 N. Spence Ave. Joel Christopher Meeks of Danville, Va., estimated the stolen property's value at $315 and damages at $400.
*A black, two-door 1999 Chevrolet Camaro was stolen from the Quality Inn parking lot at 706 Corporate Drive. Kristin Joy Lee of Mount Olive valued the car at$7,000.
*Copper pipe and fittings were stolen from the Food Lion supermarket under construction at 1809 E. Ash St., police said. The property, owned by Chappell's Plumbing and Piping of Grifton, was valued at $600.
Correction
An arrest order that was published in Friday's News-Argus for William Travis Overby, 24, of Wayne Memorial Drive was served incorrectly by Goldsboro police. Overby had paid off the citation April 20 for a noise ordinance violation
